Nikhil involved in habeas corpus

Former SP’s son has been absconding after he escaped from police custody.

Kochi: Nikhil, son of former SP K. P. Balachandran, who went absconding from Thiruvananthapuram, was also involved in a habeas corpus petition in 2013.

He had escaped from the police custody when they produced he and the girl in the case before the High Court, which criticised the cops for the escape.

The investigation into the habeas corpus case also reached nowhere. The Kochi City Police had registered a case and launched a probe to find the couple. However, it failed to get any lead.

There were allegations from the parents of the girl involved in the case that the police 'enabled' him to escape with her.

A division bench comprising Justice Pius Kuriakose and Justice P. D. Rajan had earlier sent the girl to a woman's hostel after finding that the boy had not attained the age for legally getting married in 2013.

The court also asked the parents to take the girl to the hostel while considering habeas corpus petition filed by a Thrissur native who alleged that Mr Balachandran and his son abducted his daughter.

They allegedly abducted his daughter on January 23 from his house and, under a high court order, the police produced the duo before the court.

Search still on for ex-sp’s son

The city police is groping in the dark to find Nikhil Balachandran, son of the retired Superintendent of Police KB Balachandran, accused in several criminal cases including attempt to murder. Sources in the probe team said that police may slap provisions of him.

The police failed to nab him from his hideout in the neighbouring state as he managed to flee the place minutes before the arrival of cops. He has switched off his mobile phone since then.

Earlier, he managed to escape the police dragnet by fatally knocking down a person in MG Road in Thiruvananthapuram. He also took his mother and sister as hostages to escape during a police raid conducted in his home.
