May 26-27, 2014: Nawaz Sharif attends Narendra Modi’s swearing-in as PM, the two agree on border trade, foreign secretary talks.

December 25, 2015: Narendra Modi greets Nawaz Sharif on his birthday and hours later makes a surprise stop-over in Lahore en route to India from Kabul, Afghanistan. Sharif receives Modi at the Lahore airport and flies him to his family estate in Raiwind for a 90-minute meeting.

  • Aug. 24, 2014: India cancels foreign secretary talks, citing Pakistani envoy’s meeting with Hurriyat leaders
  • Sept. 2014: Modi, Sharif give each other a miss during UN General Assembly in New York.
  • Nov. 26-27, 2014: Modi, Sharif at Saarc summit in Kathmandu , but no formal bilateral meeting. Journalist Barkha Dutt has recently revealed they met secretly, with steel baron Sajjan Jindal playing host.
  • July 10, 2015: Modi, Sharif hold bilateral meeting at Ufa, Russia, on sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting; issue joint statement. Agree on NSA-level talks.

  • Aug. 23, 2015: Pakistan cancels NSA-level talks, once again over meeting Hurriyat leaders..
  • Sept. 2015: Modi, Sharif stay at same hotel in New York during UN General Assembly, but do not meet.
  • Dec. 1, 2015: Modi, Sharif meet informally in Paris on the sidelines of COP21 climate change conference.
  • Dec. 9, 2015: Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj travels to Pakistan for Heart of Asia conference on Afghanistan , meets Nawaz Sharif and his adviser Sartaj Aziz. Two governments agree to restart comprehensive bilateral dialogue.
