They say that when music hits a person’s soul, it’s truly divine. That’s exactly what happened in Yazin Nizar’s case — director Pandiaraj was moved to tears when he heard the singer’s rendition of Pookkalai Killi Vandhu from Pasanga 2.
His voice transcends genres and even languages, as he’s sung in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. If this is not enough, he shared the mic with the Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan himself in Neeye Unaku Raja from Uthama Villain!
But how did music happen? “I was a typical kid trained in Carnatic music, who used to win singing competitions in school. Back then, a kutcheri in a temple or small sabha used to delight me — I thought that was my world. Eventually, I started taking part in reality shows on TV and sang for the first time as a playback when I was 12. It wasn’t a commercial movie though,” he adds. Seven years later, Vidhyasagar called him on board to croon for the Malayalam movie Spanish Masala — since then till date, he has over 80 songs in all four languages to his credit.
“He may not be in our midst anymore, but my fondest memory was singing in front of MS Viswanathan sir. I was part of the Apple Mega Star reality show when I sang Mohammed Rafi’s song. MSV sir was one of the guest judges. After my performance, he heaped praises on me and even invited me to sing for him some time. Even though I never got a chance, those very words remain a constant motivation,” reminiscences Yazin.
He’s not just known for his mellifluous voice, but his charming looks as well! Does he plan to get into acting — “In fact, I’ve already had a short acting stint. I made a special appearance in the movie Angry Babies with the song Zindgi (laughs).” So he’s had Mahesh Babu dance to his tunes (Charuseela from Srimanthudu) and even sang in the most expensive Malayalam song ever to be shot — Kolussu Thenni.
It’s safe to say he’s been a pretty good boy this year, but about his resolutions for New Year — “I’ve recently started performing live guitar recitals as well. So that’s a start! I would like to take up a resolution to keep up my other pending ones — I want to stay fit this year, make my parents proud,” he signs off.
