Caste politics to the fore in US universities

More than 70 per cent students, around 5,000 enrolled in the two universities are Telugus.

Hyderabad: Only 10 to 15 per cent of the engineering graduates from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh manage to get jobs. A majority of the unemployed tech graduates are doing petty jobs.

“Around 10 per cent of them, who can afford international education, take GRE, Toefl and other tests. They earn minimum scores as they lack language expertise. Several educational consultants, most of them nothing but brokers, are luring students. They are supposed to guide students but unfortunately most lack credentials.” said N.V. Ramana Rao, JNTU Hyderabad professor of civil engineering.

“Keeping in view the demand from Indian students, particularly from AP and TS, many US universities cropped up in the 2000s. Several of them are not recognised by the US education system. Most are technical campuses. These US universities come here and hold TV talk shows and attract students. The standard universities are decades old,” he said.

More than 70 per cent students, around 5,000 enrolled in the two universities are Telugus and they are called the “Manavallu University”.

Also, AP caste politics has entered several of the US universities. During elections, too, these universities are flooded with students from Vijayawada and Hyderabad, taking caste sides.
“Manare” is the most common terminology used to identify the caste. Y. Srinivas from Vijayawada who studied in one of the US universities said, “There is a tough caste fight in the elections.”
