Karimnagar: Engineer attacks parents after failing civil service exams, shot dead by cops

Balvinder was killed when he grabbed a police weapon, forcing cops to open fire.

Hyderabad: A 28-year-old was shot dead by police after he went berserk on the streets of Karimnagar early on Tuesday morning, attacking his parents and several others with a sword.

The man’s parents, two constables and an auto-rickshaw driver were among those injured during the rampage.

The man has been identified as one Balvinder Singh, an electronics engineer who worked at Oracle in Bengaluru. The police said he was suffering from depression after he failed to crack the civil services exams.

Trouble began around 6.30 am at his residence, located on the 3rd floor of a building in Laxminagar. Balvinder had an argument with his mother, following which he attacked both his parents with a sword. He left them injured in a pool of blood and rushed out of the building and started smashing car windshields.

He then attacked all pedestrians who attempted to stop him. A resident of the colony called the police and reported the incident.

On receiving information, Karimnagar I town Inspector J Vijayasaradhi along with two constables U Mallaiaah and Md Ali rushed to the spot.

“I was aiming my rifle at Balvinder Singh to scare him as he was attacking civilians on the main road. But he hit my hand hard and grabbed the weapon. In the meantime, Vijayasaradhi opened fire on him to rescue me. Otherwise, I would have been killed and bystanders shot too as my weapon was loaded,” said Mallaiah, who wounded his left wrist.

Both constables were injured trying to bring the situation under control. Balvinder was taken to a hospital along with the other injured victims. He later succumbed to his injuries.
