Debts driving many to suicide bids

Crashing businesses trigger depression, psychological trauma.
Hyderabad: People who are unable to repay debts often develop suicidal tendencies and approach city mental hospitals and psychiatric units in a state of depression. Ten such cases have recently came to light in the last two months, in which wholesale merchants, chit fund partners and also hardware businessmen have approached hospitals seeking help as they were contemplating suicide. In the case of the wholesale cloth merchant it was found that he had left a note with his wife and had told vendors that if they troubled him every 15 days for money he would be forced to commit suicide. Dr Minhaj Nasirabadi said, “In such cases we have found that the person is very troubled and their sense of honour is badly hurt as they have got into a situation which they need time to come out of. At the same time, there is pressure from others to return what is borrowed. Stuck in this situation, many of them are actually wanting time and when these people do not understand they get into depression and severe anxiety.”
Apart from psychological counseling, the patients had to be also given medication for four weeks to get them out of this tendency. Similar was the case of two chit fund partners, housewives who had been doing the business for five years. They were cheated of a big amount and were unable to handle the anxiety. One of them attempted suicide. This scared the other members of the chit fund who were not willing to question her till she completely recovered.
Psychologist Dr Pragya Rashmi said, “With human dignity hurt, most of these people are unable to sort out the problem. While there is guilt at not being able to pay, there is also the fear that if caught the image of the individual or person will be tarnished. Hence these factors make them very sensitive and they start looking for an escape plan and that drives them to contemplate suicide.”
