Pollution touches new high in Uttar Pradesh

The state capital emerged as the most polluted city in the country.
Lucknow: Pollution in Lucknow touched a new high on Wednesday and the state capital emerged as the most polluted city in the country. According to the report of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) the air quality index value in Lucknow on Wednesday was 471 while Kanpur ranked second with 429, Faridabad came third with 402 and Delhi was at fourth position with 382.
The CPCB report said that the excessive particulate matter in the air in Lucknow was responsible for the high pollution record. The emission from vehicles and the fog compounded the problem.
The Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) has blamed excessive construction work in the state capital for the increase in particulate matter in the air.
“There is so much construction work going on and the building material including sand and mortar and stone crushing is done in the open. The particles get into the air and are inhaled by people and this causes a lot of respiratory problems,” said an IITR scientist.
Dr K.N. Pandey, a medical practitioner said that with the prevailing pollution level, it is advisable for people to either avoid going out of their houses or move out with a mask.
