CHIKKAMAGALURU: Various Hindu organizations taking part in Datta Jayanti celebrations at Baba Budangiri Hills, Chikkamagaluru from December 22 to 24, are planning a show of strength to send across a message to the state government that members of the organizations would not take any decision which would hurt the sentiments of Hindus on Datta Peeta, a disputed site.
Datta Peeta is a cave shrine in the Baba BudangiriHill ranges and is a disputed site for Hindus and Muslims. After the matter reached the courts, the Supreme Court left it to the state government to resolve the dispute. Now the onus is on the state government to settle the matter amicably.
Harish Shetty, Chikkamagaluru district secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, revealed to Deccan Chronicle on Tuesday that the number of pilgrims to Datta Jayanti has dropped over the last couple of years. “We have plans to bring in more pilgrims to the Datta shrine like in 2001-02 when the numbers of pilgrims was around 50, 000.”
By organizing a show of strength, a message would go to the state government that any decision against the sentiments of Hindus would have dire consequences for society, said Mr Setty. In 2001-02 there were many units of VHP which were active. The secretary said VHP plans to revive these units at the village level to bring in pilgrims for the Jayanthi.
