The recall will encompass cars from the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda
New Delhi: German auto major Volkswagen on Tuesday agreed to recall 3.23 lakh vehicles in India after a government-ordered probe found it using diesel engines equipped with a device which help in cheating emission tests. The recall will encompass cars from the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda.
Volkswagen officials met with the officials of the department of heavy industries on Tuesday after the submission of report by apex automotive testing agency ARAI.
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) found that diesel cars manufactured in India by Volkswagen having EA189 engine were fitted with the “defeat device”, which may lead to excess nitrogen oxide emission levels in on-road vehicles, according to government sources.
Volkswagen Group India in a statement announced a voluntary recall for updating all cars with EA189 engines in the Indian market.
It said that owners with respective vehicles will be informed after the requi-red solutions are approved by the authorities and technical measures will be implemented at no cost to the customers.
During the meeting, Volkswagen said it presented its observations, findings and outlines of possible solutions on the EA 189 diesel engines. The company will first present the technical released solution to the ministry and ARAI. “Once approved from the competent authorities, the respective brands of the Volkswagen Group in India will carry out necessary actions.”
