Hyderabad: Rare snake species discovered

The snake was last sighted in Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad: A rare snake, the Stout Sand Snake, was sighted in the city recently on November 26 at Boduppal sparking interest among nature lovers in the biodiversity of Telangana.
The snake was last sighted in Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh more than a century ago in 1896 after which the snake was never seen anywhere in south India. The snake is endemic to India with confirmed records of sightings only in Gujarat, Maharashtra and MP. Stout Sand Snake is a mildly venomous (non-lethal to humans) terrestrial snake that is active during the day. It is fast moving and feeds on lizards and frogs. It is protected as per Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act.
The snake was rescued from Boduppal by a member of the Friends of Snakes Society and is now at the society’s shelter in Sainikpuri for behavioural studies.
