Nizamsagar to be fortified to stabilise three lakh acres

Mr Rao sanctioned additional 2,000 houses under 2-BHK scheme

Nizamabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao directed the irrigation department officials to stabilise 3 lakh acres under Nizamsagar project by strengthening canals and distributaries.

He said that re-designing of irrigation projects will bring maximum land under cultivation. Canals, distributaries should be designed according to the new projects will come up, he said.

The CM reviewed the progress of various programmes in Nizamabad district at his camp office in Hyderabad on Sunday. Irrigation minister T. Harish Rao, agriculture minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Government Whip Gampa Govardhan, MLCs, MLAs and MPs K. Kavitha, BB Patil, ZP chairman D. Raju, chief secretary Rajiv Sharma, irrigation advisor K. Vidyasagar Rao and others were present.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Chandrasekhar Rao said that Nizamsagar, Sriramsagar projects and canals should be repaired and works will be completed at the earliest. Proposed Kaleshwaram project will benefit Nizamabad district and water will be drawn from Mallannasagar, he said. Inter-state Lendi project works should also be completed early and directed the release of funds for land acquisition and other works, he said.

The CM directed irrigation officials to coordinate with their counterparts in Maharashtra on Lendi project, which would irrigate dry lands in backward Jukkal Assembly constituency. Mr Rao said that Pranahita-Chevella lift irrigation works in Balkonda, Armoor and Nizamabad rural constituencies should be completed without any delay. Mr Rao sanctioned additional 2,000 houses under 2-BHK scheme and suggested to take up works at least 50 houses in each block. He said that houses will be allocated to women beneficiaries on lottery basis. He said that graft should be prevented in housing corporation.
