KOCHI: The prestigious Maharaja's College in the city is eagerly awaiting the release of their college magazine this week, the first one after getting autonomy. The anticipation is also because last year’s magazine had triggered unusual protests on the campus following publication of explicit pictures and content that provoked.
The SFI which held the post of the magazine’s editor lost the seat in the following election whereas the KSU won it.
Now, the KSU editor, BA political science final year student Rayson Kuriakose, is bringing out this year’s magazine while the SFI activists are keeping their fingers crossed. With the college union election of the autonomous college round the corner, temperatures have risen.
However, Rayson Kuriakose is unfazed and says that he is hopeful of his magazine meeting the aspirations of the students.
The magazine is named “Kannu Kothi Paranna Kakka,” and offers view of campus life
“The last magazine titled ‘Chaavupaadal’ by SFI had high-brow stuff with no real connect with campus life. The issues of LGBT communities were debated in it. The students were unable to relate to them. Moreover, the pictures used shocked girl students and they could not open the magazine in family gatherings or in a bus. This year’s magazine titled “Kannu Kothi Paranna Kakka” lends a view of the world including the campus with the ubiquitous crow being the principal narrator,” says Rayson.
However, SFI college unit secretary Balu Pradeep said that the best answer to last year’s criticism of their magazine was the best magazine award bestowed on it by the MG University later.
“Our magazine also debated the issues of autonomy to the college and the agitation against it. Unfortunately it became the target of a vicious and politically motivated campaign. However, when this year’s magazine comes out, we will critique it based on solid rationale. We will react once it reaches our hand,” Balu Pradeep said.
Rayson said that this year’s magazine had four sections – Nerkazhcha, Nirakazhcha, Kanmazhi and Kanakkazhcha. While Kanmazhi dwells on issues related to women, Nirakkazhcha trains eyes on the simmering issues of the campus including love and friendship.
“Like every Maharaja’s magazine there is spark in it, but we have tried to skip avoidable controversies,” said Rayson.
