Chennai: Murder leads to cop’s suspension

Graduate killed by pal in gambling den

Chennai: Following the sensational murder in a recreation club, found functioning as a gambling den on Rajaji Salai, North Beach police station inspector S. Anbukarasan had been placed under suspension.

A detailed probe into the incident confirmed that gambling had led to the death. Earlier, on Friday, the police were trying to attribute Kumar's murder to causes other than the gambling at the RR recreation club.

Adding intrigue to the incident is the fact that the club is reportedly managed by a group of lawyers. “Inspector Anbukarasan was placed under suspension pending enquiry,” a senior police official said.

Kumar, a former call centre employee and BBA graduate, was murdered on Thursday night by his friend-turned-foe Jagadish with whom he had been gambling. It was the first murder related to gambling activity happening at the club.

Police sources said that senior police officials had pulled up Anbukarasan for allowing gambling to take place in his jurisdiction and also for failing to stop the murder, which was triggered out of the illegal gambling activities.

The suspect had lost over a whopping Rs 30 lakh over 10 days in gambling which had led to the murder, a police officer, who is familiar with the case, revealed. Kumar was from SID CO Nagar and Jagadeesh, working as a salesman in a shop in Purasaiwalkam, had taken money from the shop to gamble.

Police sources say that gambling involving huge stakes is not unusual in Chennai clubs which operate as recreations centres. There are more than 30 such clubs in various pockets in Chennai including places like T Nagar, Triplicane, Korattur and Royapuram. In all these clubs gambling is done with the ‘blessings’ of the local police station. After Kumar’s murder, senior police officials have now asked for a fresh list of such clubs from all police stations.
