Spanish flavour for Hyderabad's tennis

Over 50 kids took part in a training camp-cum-selection trials
Hyderabad: Around 52 kids kick-started Sports Village’s tennis training-camp-cum selection trials, in association with the Barcelona Tennis Academy, for boys and girls between ages 7 and 20 at the Jubilee Hills International Centre here on Saturday.
“We have had a terrific response from the people of Hyderabad. The city is filled with energy and the kids are really eager to learn. Our aim is to produce atleast 10 players from the country who can feature in the top-100 singles rankings in the world in the coming years,” coach Raphael Maurer said.
Speaking about the skills the BTA coaches would look to impart on the kids, the Swiss said, “From what we have seen so far, they do not make optimal use of the court. So we want to change that, and also help them develop their baseline game, drop shots, spins and various other aspects.”
It is not an unknown fact that Asians are genetically weaker than Europeans or Americans. So fitness coach Adria Monras Consuegra has some plans to help build the players’ strength. “What a player eats and drinks goes a long way in developing his/her fitness level. We will guide them with diet, use medicine balls, and various other tricks of the trade to help them improve their fitness, which in return will help raise their game.”
The BTA will pick the top-10 players from the 14-day training camp to attend a three-month training camp in Barcelona, Spain.
