Plea to remove encroachments on Kodambakkam road

The road had been encroached by adjacent land owners and others

Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the Chennai corporation to consider a representation seeking removal of encroachments from Kodambakkam high road, one of the most congested roads in Chennai, in two months.

The First bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, before which a PIL filed by S. Parthiban of Saidapet came up for hearing, directed the deputy commissioner to consider the representation of the petitioner, who sought a direction to remove encroachments from the road, in two months.

The petitioner submitted that originally the Kodambakkam high road had a width of 32.5 ft. Over the years, the road had been encroached by adjacent land owners and others. It has now shrunk to 22 ft. As a result, people suffered.

Counsel A. Ilaya Perumal contended that the authorities had taken steps to widen the road up to 40 ft. Based on his representation, the authorities attempted to widen the road in February 2015. However, they had not continued with the work and encroachments were not removed from both sides of the road.

On October 12, he sent a representation to the authorities. As there was no response, he filed the writ petition.
