12 nabbed for duping woman

The victim said in complaint that she had registered her details on shaadi.com in October

Hyderabad: The cyber crime police of Cyberabad arrested 12 persons including a Nigerian for allegedly extorting Rs 9.59 lakh from a woman for “releasing a package” addressed to her containing jewellery, travellers cheques and clothes that was withheld by customs at the Chatrapathi Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai.

The victim said in complaint that she had registered her details on shaadi.com in October. One Mr Smith Walter expressed interest and she accepted. They exchanged mails after this and also chatted via the Net.

On October 31 she received an e-mail from Mr Smith Walter saying that a ‘package’ (containing expensive jewellery, travellers cheques, laptop, mobile phones, clothes, etc.) would be delivered through Errand Transport Express and the copy of the Airway Bill along with tracking ID was emailed to her.

Between 2nd and 4th November 2015, she received phone calls from one Kanika Sharma who introduced herself as an official of the customs department and the woman was asked to pay Rs 42,500 for its release.

Later, she was made to part with more money and it came to Rs 9,59,500 in all. A case was registered under the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act and during the course of investigation it was found that the funds from the beneficiary accounts were withdrawn at Hyderabad and transferred to other local accounts.
