Madrasa abuse: Facebook blocks woman scribe’s account

Rajeena’s post talked of the ‘ustad’ touching the private parts of boys attending the madrasa

Kochi: Facebook on Wednesday blocked the account of award-winning journalist V.P. Rejeena, presumably on mass reporting of a post which recounted instances of sexual harassment her madrasa classmates experienced three decades ago.

“My account was blocked on Tuesday but I got it reopened after I gave FB identity proof,” Ms Rajeena told DC. “But I found it blocked on Wednesday too.” She suspected massive reporting of the posts who were offended by it were behind it.

Ms Rajeena’s post on Sunday talked of the ‘ustad’ touching the private parts of the young boys who were attending the madrasa, and also touching a girl student the wrong way and her violent reactions against him. The post went viral immediately attracting more than 7,000 likes and 2000-odd shares in two days.

“Abusive comments started pouring in immediately,” Ms Rajeena said. “They were mostly by people of the community who said I disgraced the religion. My inbox, too, was filled with comments of the worst language possible.”

The abusive comments became calls after the account was deleted. “Generally, reactions to such posts subside in a day or two, but in my case, there has been no let up even after four days,” she said.
