UN refugee head: Japan should accept more, fix asylum system

Japan is a major donor of humanitarian aid but accepts very few refugees

Tokyo: The UN refugee chief, Antonio Guterres, says Japan should be doing more to help with the global catastrophe of asylum seekers.

Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said Wednesday that he hoped Japan could admit more refugees, especially Syrians, on a "humanitarian basis."

He said Japan needs also to improve its asylum system and do a better job of integrating the refugees it accepts into its society.

Guterres spoke at an event where the Japanese apparel company, Fast Retailing, announced a partnership with the UNHCR to expand its support for refugees, which includes internships and donations of funds and of recycled clothing.

Japan is a major donor of humanitarian aid but accepts very few refugees each year.
