Gotra Maha Sabha to relaunch Nilpu Samaram

Both leaders ruled out the possibility of aligning with the proposed third front of the BJP

KOCHI: The Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha led by C.K. Janu is all set to resume the much publicised Nilpu Samaram (standing agitation) protesting against the failure of the government to fulfil its promises after the first Nilpu Samaram before the secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram last year.

“The new phase of the protest will begin in January,” Ms Janu told reporters here on Monday. The AGMS has also decided to float a new political party, Adivasi Ooru Vikasana Munnani, to safeguard the interests of the tribal people. The new party will be floated by March next year, AGMS coordinator M. Geethanandan said.

The two leaders said the government failed to keep its promise to implement Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act popularly known as PESA Act, allocation of one acre of land to the each Adivasi family evicted during Muth-anga occupation and Rs 1 lakh as compensation to each of the child detained during that agitation.

“The AGMS has no other way but relaunch the agitation,” she said. “It will continue till the promises are kept.” They said a convention of the Munnani would be held in March, to provide a concrete shape to the party.

Both leaders ruled out the possibility of aligning with the proposed third front of the BJP. “We are opposed to Hindutva politics,” they said.

The new party will also represent the interests of Dalits, fishermen and all the downtrodden.
