Festival to showcase Kerala culture

Participants are mostly members of the different Malayali units and students from various parts of the state
Chennai: ‘Avanipoovarangu’, the two-month long festival that will showcase various cultural contours of Kerala began with ‘Pookkalam’, the floral rangoli competition and ‘Kaikottikali’, a traditional dance performed by women in Kerala held at the basement of Spencer Plaza.
Forty-seven teams drew ‘Pookkalam’ depicting the different cultural heritages of Kerala such as ‘Kalaripayattu’, ‘Theyyam’, ‘Ezhunnallathu’ and ‘Kathakali’ with flowers ranging from ‘Semanthi’, Lilly and various other local varieties.
“It was a spectacular view from the top where different ‘Pookkalam’ were drawn with women dancing wearing the traditional sarees,” said Valsamma Cherian, a homemaker who happened to visit Spencer Plaza.
The participants are mostly members of the different Malayali units and students from various parts of the state. “The next programme is the sports-meet that will be held on December 12, followed by the ‘Pravaseeyam’, It will showcase the talents of NRIs from the state which is followed by a family meet and a drama competition,” said T. Sreekumar, president, Confederation of Tamil Nadu Malayalee Associations (CTMA).
The festival that has been coordinated with the help of 107 Malayalee organisations in the state will end on January 10 with the grand finale of all the competitions that were held during two months.
