IAS, IPS officers deployed for relief works in Nellore district

The CM decided to stay back in Nellore to monitor the relief operations

Nellore: Services of as many as 30 IAS officers are being used to head the committees being formed to assess the losses and damages due to heavy rains in Nellore district.

Police department is also deputing five IPS officers to Nellore at the instance of CM to handle traffic on National Highway, where hundreds of vehicles are lined up on both sides of to cross the single road laid on breached spot, apart from other duties.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu hinted about this during a review with the officials at Nellore on Saturday. He advised the higher authorities to make use of the services of revenue, municipal and other department officials from other districts for assessing the damage and relief work when officials mentioned shortage for staff to carry out the work.

The CM found fault with the engineers for faulty design pertaining to National Highways while referring to breached highway.

Speaking to mediapersons after inspecting Sarveypalli reservoir, he said that tanks and bridges constructed during British rule are intact even after decades but our engineers are not even following 20 per cent of their quality.

Referring to the huge loss to the aqua sector, he said that they have appealed to the Centre for aid. He pointed to '3,000 crore they sought from the Centre for flood relief.

He attributed the large scale damage in 500 villages Nellore district to 85 cm rainfall in four days which was not witnessed during last five decades. He said that they are posting one officer for each mandal to oversee the relief operations. He reiterated about plans to link Penna and Krishna rivers.

Attributing encroachments and poor quality of irrigation works carried out during previous regime, he said they are forced to pay for their mistakes. He visited rain affected areas and interacted with the victims. The CM decided to stay back in Nellore to monitor the relief operations and speed up the restoration of the second road of the national highway. He said that they would take steps to remove all encroachments on irrigation canals within 3 months.
