I’ll act again if the script attracts me: Jomol

Former actress Jomol talks about her new venture, a gifting portal, and possibilities of making a comeback to films

It has been around 13 years since Jomol took a break from films. And the National Award winner (special jury mention — 1998) is now back in a new avatar — that of an entrepreneur.

“In fact I was not planning to think about starting a business. It was my husband who inspired me to start a venture which could bring out a revolutionary change in the gifts you give to your loved ones,” says Jomol alias Gauri Pillai, who is behind the venture — Make It Special Solutions.

“We were thinking why people were spending huge amounts on flowers as gifts, as they do not last for more than three or four days. It is better to gift a dinner, lunch, spa, rooms, houseboat…things like that. Our firm gives you the chance to gift these services at selected hotels to your dear ones by registering through our website. The novelty of our service is that you can book and pay for food in advance through sites, which you cannot do through any other channels,” says the former actress, adding that she would make a comeback only if she got a tempting role.

“Though it’s been (several) years since I have acted in films, I still get calls from filmmakers. They want to know whether I am willing to act again.”

“Yes, I am. But only if the script attracts me,” says Jomol, who has not signed films after her marriage to engineer Chandrashekhar Pillai.

“It was my decision to take a break from films. But he encourages me to continue with films and dancing, if I am interested. He does not say no to my likes. That was why I acted in two TV serials around five-six years back. We were in Mumbai then and I used to come down here just for those projects. And he says, ‘do not say no to films just because of kids. They will grow up and follow their own paths’. But I still give more importance to them. I used to go to their schools and guide them for their lessons at home, without sending them for tuition classes,” adds Jomol, who considers actor Suresh Gopi as her elder brother.

“Though we have not acted together in films, it was during the state award ceremony in 1998, in which he got best actor and I got best actress, that we got acquainted. Later, we became family friends and I am like a younger sister to him,” she concludes.
