Deluge 34 cm rain brings Kanchi to its knees

Rainwater enters houses in Pallavaram, Tambaram Pallikaranai, Ambattur, Red Hills and Madhavaram
Chennai: Normal life was thrown out of gear in greater Chennai with Chennai and Kancheepuram receiving heavy rains. Kancheepuram had record rainfall of 34 cm on Friday flooding Perumbakkam, Pallavaram, Tambaram, Pallikaranai.
Central and North Chennai were also worst hit after overnight rains. Areas like Nungambakkam, Teynampet and Anna Nagar also suffered inundation as the city corporation machinery struggled to cope with the deluge. Rainwater entered several houses.
At least four subways at Chetpet Gengur Reddy junction, Vyasarpadi- Ganesapuram junction, Thillagai Ganga Nagar and St Thomas Mount marooned forcing corporation to close the subways for traffic. To bale out stormwater the corporation operated high power motor pumps in 16 subways and deployed 16,500 workers in two shifts to clear water logging across Chennai. By evening, Chennai limped back to normalcy, However interior roads suffered water-logging with sewer choking in Pulianthope, Pattalam, Choolai and Triplicane areas. Two teams headed by local administration minister S. P. Velumani and Chennai mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy conducted daylong inspections at R K Nagar, Anna Nagar, Royapuram and T Nagar.
Firemen rescue 1,200 persons
On Friday, firemen rescued nearly 1,200 persons from flooded and collapsed houses across the city and accommodated them in corporation camps. The places included Ennore, Avadi, Villivakkam, Manali and Kodungaiyur. Six incidents of collapsing of houses and walls were reported. There was no casualty. The walls of a graveyard at Saidapet also came down due to rain. Over 95 trees got uprooted in the city.
