OROP scheme implemented, armed forces veterans want more

‘In future, the pension would be re-fixed every 5 years’

New Delhi: The much-awaited notification for the implementation of the one-rank-one-pension scheme for armed forces veterans was issued by the government on Saturday.

According to the notification, the pension of past pensioners would be re-fixed on the basis of the pension of the retirees of 2013 and the benefit would be from July 1, 2014.

“Pension will be re-fixed as per average of minimum and maximum pensions of personnel retired in 2013 in same rank and same length of service,” said the notification. However, immediately after the notification, Maj. Gen. Satbir Singh (Retd), who has led the ex-servicemen’s protests, said, “The OROP notification will not be acceptable.”

“In future, the pension would be re-fixed every 5 years. Personnel who opt to get discharged, now on, on their request will not get benefits of OROP. It will be effective prospectively,” said the order.

About 25 lakh military veterans are expected to benefit from the scheme. The Centre has decided to appoint a judicial committee to look into anomalies, if any, arising out of implementation and the committee will submit its report in six months.
