A haven in the hills

Sikkim and its modern capital city Gangtok provide a tranquil, scenic getaway like few others in the country

Apart from Offering a lesser-known view of the majestic Kangchenjunga, Sikkim and its modern capital city Gangtok also provide a tranquil, scenic getaway like few other places in the country

A magical spell of surprises, excitement and adventure beyond one’s expectation is what Sikkim’s modern capital was to me. The pristine alpine forests, lofty snow-capped mountains, rugged landscapes dotted with villages frozen in time and a rich tribal culture enriched with Tibetan Buddhist accents gave me a different feel altogether from what I knew about the ‘incredible India’ that boasts of forts and havelis, backwaters, beaches and rich heritage sites.

While walking through the buzzing streets of Gangtok, I realised that my plan to extend my trip from Darjeeling was the wisest decision the globetrotter in me could have taken. I was left with a long face after missing the sight of Mount Kangchenjunga from Tiger Hills at Darjeeling due to heavy fog, so I thought of exploring Gangtok as it is just a four-hour drive away. Next thing I know, I was in the jeep that was heading to the highland. Sitting beside the driver, I told him that I have to come back to Darjeeling to see the Kangchenjunga. He continued to drive with a smile and stopped after a while to point to the left side of the road. I have no words to express how magnificent the view was — yes, I was seeing the mighty Mount Kangchenjunga! He did mention that this view was not as grand as what one would have from Tiger Hills, but for me it was a moment that gave my whole trip a new dimension and from that very moment, the magic started to unravel.

Without giving me enough time to dwell on the view for long, the Teesta river that flowed in front kept on challenging me to play with her. Finally I fell for her charm, and danced with the pitching and rolling waters. The rafting was real fun and gave my adrenaline an all-time high. The small shops that offered piping hot tea brought my energy level back. And later I encountered a long line of pilgrims climbing the ghats.

Seeing my curiosity, the driver told me that I am visiting Gangtok on the most auspicious day of the year, the Buddha Purnima. Following them, our jeep reached Gangtok. The streets, the smiles, the colours, the fragrance of the flowers and the aroma of hot dishes beckoned me to walk further.

I reached the magnificent Rumtek Monastery which was packed with invaluable artifacts, precious metal sculptures and ritualistic belongings. After clicking some of the beautiful moments of Buddha Purnima special rituals in my camera, I headed to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology to explore myriad nuances of Tibetan traditions and Buddhism. The museum, packed with relics such as prehistoric manuscripts, spiritual scroll paintings and Tantric ritualistic objects opened a new world unveiling the history of a bygone era.

As the sun slowly set, it was a happy time for the local folks — the streets of MG Marg, a social and cultural hub, came alive. The aroma of momos dragged me to explore some of the ethnic delicacies of the place. And I tasted each dish they offered looking at the small gangs sitting on the streets and sharing the day’s happenings.

The next day, I went to explore Natula Pass, the major snow-clad corridor passage between India and Tibet. I was thrilled — almost like a child — dreaming of rolling in the snow, throwing snowballs and making my very own snowman. But by the time I reached the check post, I was told that the roads had been closed due to bad weather. Disappointed, I decided take a stroll in the city to capture pictures of landscapes, experiences and people.

I am already planning my next road trip, to spend more time in the snow in Natula Pass and Tsomgo Lake. In my ride back to Bagdogra airport, I had a feeling that Gangtok, Himalaya’s best-kept travel secret, is calling me back for more.
