Agenda driven policy revision may hurt country

He was speaking at the national seminar held in the city
Chennai: Calling similarities between the government’s Make in India agenda and the new revision to higher education policy, noted academician/scientist R. Ramanujam, said that a divisive agenda is being thrust on society.
He was speaking at the national seminar held in the city by the state platform for common school system on the challenges facing higher education.
“The government wants to skill 50 crore workers by 2022. What would be more apt than branching students out from the eighth grade into vocational streams and then make available an endless supply of skilled labourers for the many industries they wish to set up via Make in India,” said Ramanujam.
Not even 12 per cent of Indian students are able to get into higher education institutions. “The situation is that the higher the education is, the more the barriers are,” he said.
The elite, Ramanujam said, would remain relatively untroubled by the revision. “The urban elitist and the educated middle class will welcome if the generalist education at present makes way for vocational method,” he said.
