PWF to declare poll strategy on November 2

Leaders of MDMK, CPI (M), CPI and VCK met at the Marxist party office at T Nagar to decide on their strategy for the Assembly polls

Chennai: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko on Friday announced that the strategy of the four parties in People’s Welfare Front for the Assembly polls would be declared on November 2 and expressed hope that DMDK will join them.

The leaders of MDMK, CPI (M), CPI and VCK met at the Marxist party office at T Nagar to decide on their strategy for the Assembly polls and finalise the common minimum programme (CMP). However, the leaders decided to postpone the announcement of their stand on the Assembly polls yet again.

Vaiko, who is also convenor of PWF, said besides explaining the socio-economic and political stand of the front, the CMP will highlight the “anti people policies” of the Central and State governments and the front’s action plan. “The CMP will be released on November 2 at Thayagam, MDMK’s headquarters after four parties discuss it in their respective party forums,” he said, adding that the front’s approach towards the polls will also be declared that day.

When asked whether DMDK will join them, Vaiko said, “You think positively. Hope positively. There is a meaning to it.” To a query about his recent flight journey along with DMDK chief Vijayakanth, he said both were sitting next to each other. “We were discussing politics. But I cannot reveal what we discussed,” he said. He also said TMC chief G.K. Vasan and Vijayakanth were good friends and continued to maintain a good relationship with them. However, Vaiko dismissed the argument that PWF will split anti government votes.

Vaiko who was accompanied by CPI (M) state secretary G. Ramakrishnan, CPI state deputy secretary K. Subarayan and VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan announced that the front would hold a demonstration in Tiruchy on October 31 seeking dismissal of Union minister V.K. Singh for making a derogatory statement, and to protest the continuing attacks on minorities and dalits and killing of writers and activists. He also said a state-wide protest would be held on November 3 condemning the Central and state governments’ failure to curb rise in the prices of essential commodities.
