Upgraded food labs to function soon, says health secretary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of the observance of World Food Day, the Commissionerate of Food Safety on Friday organised a national seminar on social protection and agriculture.

As many as 300 people took part in the seminar which focused on a slew of topics including the importance of food packaging, social protection for food security and health protection through food safety.

Chief scientist of Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSRTI) Alok Kumar Srivastava, Thomas Biju Mathew of Agricultural University and Assistant professor of Kozhikode NIT, A Sujith presented papers on the occasion.

Health secretary K Elangovan, who was part of the seminar, said that upgraded laboratories would start functioning very soon.

He said that the public would be able to avail the services of the laboratories then.He also added that Kerala was far ahead compared to other states in implementing the food safety and standards act.

He said that Kerala was the first state in the country to enter into an agreement with Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) to enforce the food safety act more effectively here.
