British Guantanamo Bay inmate who was given 1 million pound compensation set off to join ISIS

His wife trailed him to Syria to try and persuade him to return to UK

London: Ex- British Guantanamo Bay inmate Jamal al-Harith, who was paid a compensation of 1 million pounds as a military pay off, has reportedly fled UK to join the Islamic State.

According to reports in Daily Mail, the information comes through the disclosure made by Shukee Begum, the 33-year-old wife of al-Harith who escaped from ISIS controlled Syria last month. Shukee Begum and her five children travelled to Syria ten months ago in order to persuade her husband, who had fled Britain 18 months ago, to return, but ended up getting shuttled between rebels and hostages, until she was rescued by the al-Qaeeda affiliate al-Nusra front.

British citizen al-Harith, was captured in 2002 March by the US troops in Afghanistan and was locked up in the infamous Cuban prison for suspected Taliban links. He was released after two years from the prison after relentless campaigning by the then government and was awarded a compensation of one million pounds after he alleged that British agents and the military was party to his arrest and incarceration in prison.

The escape of al-Harith and the following trail of Shukee Begum has raised questions regarding the efficiency of the British terror monitoring system, especially at a time when the last British resident of Guantanamo Bay, Shaker Aamer who denies allegations of being Osama Bin Laden’s associate, is all set to return.
