Rape by two men is not gang-rape: Karnataka Home Minister KJ George

After an outrage, the minister apologised for the comment

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister KJ George on Friday raked controversy by making a bizarre comment that two men raping a woman is not gang-rape.

“How is it a gang-rape if two people rape? Shouldn’t there be at least three or four people for it to be called gang rape?” the Karnataka Home Minister said.

The remarks came after media sought a response from George in alleged gang-rape of a 22-year-old BPO employee raped by two men who offered her a lift home.

Bengaluru police had arrested two people Suneel Omkarappa (23) and Yogesh Malleshappa (27), both drivers by profession for allegedly sexually assaulting the 22-year-old woman.

Police said that the two men are from Kadur in Chikmgalur district and have been in Bengaluru for the last three years.

This is not the first time such a bizarre comment has been made. Earlier, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh had blamed girls for being raped.

"First girls develop friendship with boys. Then when differences occur, they level rape charges. Boys will be boys, they commit mistakes. Will they be hanged for rape," he had said.

In another instance, the SP chief had said, "Four boys cannot rape a girl. It is impossible. One commits rape and then four more are named."
