Kuwait agrees to recruit nurses through eMigrate

Kuwait was one of the major job avenues for nurses from Kerala over the last many years
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After months of deliberations, the Kuwait government has agreed to make recruitment of nurses from India through India government's e-Migrate portal. A formal memorandum of understanding will be signed by the two nations by November.
NORKA Minister K.C. Joseph told DC that the Indian Ambassador in Kuwait had informed the state government of the willingness of the Kuwait health authorities. This is a follow-up to the talks initiated by an Indian delegation comprising state government officials with the Kuwait health ministry officials in April.
“It is learnt that the Kuwait authorities have agreed to make all recruitments of Indian nurses to government and private hospitals through the e-Migrate portal. This is a positive step that will ensure a fair overseas recruitment process and better service conditions for Indian nurses,” said Mr. Joseph.
Kuwait was one of the major job avenues for nurses from Kerala over the last many years. Hence the initial reluctance being shown by the
Kuwait health authorities in adopting the fresh recruitment norms of India was a major setback to the Malayali nurses aspiring for overseas jobs.
The state government had also brought to the notice of the centre the recent reports of nursing job scam accused Uthup Varghese making illegal recruitment of nurses to Kuwait using visit visas and collecting huge charges from candidates.
The Kuwait government had initially raised concerns over following the laws and procedures prescribed by India. But the Indian embassy officials in Kuwait could convince them of the need for routing the recruitment through e-Migrate, NORKA sources said.
As per the new recruitment procedure, only government- run agencies NORKA-Roots, Overseas Development and Employment Promotion Council in Kerala and Overseas Manpower Corporation of Tamil Nadu are authorised to recruit nurses to foreign countries.
Foreign employers should place the demand for nurses on the e-Migrate portal, and declare the service conditions.
