J&K CM assures speedy trial in cases of crimes against women

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Thursday described violence against women as a matter of serious concern and assured speedy trial in all such cases so that people responsible for such heinous crimes get maximum punishment.

Sayeed was speaking in the state Legislative Assembly on a Calling Attention Notice, moved by Khanyar MLA, Ali Mohammad Sagar.

"It is a matter of serious concern. But I assure speedy trial in all such cases so that people responsible for such heinous crimes get maximum punishment prescribed under the law," he said.

The Chief Minister also directed the police to fast-track investigation in cases related to violence against women so that the guilty are brought to justice.

He said to prevent such incidents in future, the women will have to come forward and report the matter to the police so that perpetrators of such crimes are booked and brought to justice.

"The police will have to take effective steps for instilling confidence among people in the law-enforcement agencies," he said.

Referring to the case of a woman in Khanyar, the chief minister assured the House of a speedy trial so as to hand out exemplary punishment to those found guilty of burning her.
