Transport department to crack down on private cab operators

Cab aggregators said that they have the best safety features
BENGALURU: With the horror on wheels striking the city, private cab aggregators have to buck up and double the safety measures in their vehicles. How do they make women commuters feel safe after a BPO staffer was taken in a vehicle around the city and then raped on Saturday night?
Transport Commissioner Ramegowda said, “We have instructed all the RTOs, cab operators and police stations to check the antecedents of all drivers. We are enforcing the rules aggressively. We have asked the cab operators to display the driver’s details in the vehicles, but most of the cab aggregators are not following it. We have told them to install inbuilt GPS systems in their vehicles and we have been seizing vehicles for not following the order.”
On the other hand, cab aggregators said that they have the best safety features in place and their commuters need not worry. An official from Ola Cabs said that their vehicles have two layers of GPS in the vehicles – one is in the driver’s mobile and the other is the hard-fitted equipment near the vehicle’s engine. The company recently also introduced a new safety feature, ‘Number Masking’, which prevents drivers from seeing customer's mobile number. With this, calls made by the driver-partners can be traced by Ola from archived recordings at all times.”
Though Uber does not have a non-detachable GPS in the vehicle, it claims it has strong safety features, like the riders being able to send trip details to five pre-selected contacts through the app, which allows friends and family to track the exact location and trip progress in real time from start to finish. The company has also added an SOS button in the app so riders can immediately contact local authorities in an emergency.
