BENGALURU: In Bengaluru, one out of five citizens is a BJP member though the state unit of the party has failed to achieve the target of enrolling one crore new members following a diktat by president Amit Shah.
Riding on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state unit of BJP has successfully added 17,44,690 new members in Bengaluru city alone. The state unit, however, has fallen short of the one crore target by 16 lakhs. Of the 83.57 lakh new members, party workers have personally enrolled 65.25 lakh members while the remaining 18.31 lakh members were enrolled through the missed calls campaign, according to leaders of the state unit of BJP.
According to statistics released by the leaders, after Bengaluru city, the party has able to convince voters of Old-Mysuru region to embrace BJP membership. In Mysuru city and rural district, party has able to add 2.83 lakh new members, while in Mandya 1.13 lakh people have taken party membership.
In Hassan, home turf of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, party has enrolled 1.66 lakh members and in Chamarajanagar, the party has convinced 75818 people to take BJP membership.
The leaders said the party has enrolled 2.29 lakh members in Tumakuru district, 1.33 lakh members in Bengaluru rural district, 1.12 lakh members in Chitradurga, 1.80 lakh people in Davangere district and in Kolar, party workers have enrolled 1.58 lakh members.
In Belagavi district, party has enrolled 2.76 lakh members, 2.29 lakh people of Hubballi-Dharwad, 2.44 lakh people in Bijapura, 1.91 lakh voters in Chikkodi, 1.32 lakh people of Bidar and 1.67 lakh in Raichur district, according to the leaders.
In BJP strongholds such as Dakshina Kannada, party workers have enrolled 2.56 lakhs, in Udupi 1.43 lakhs, 1. 40 lakhs in Chikkamagaluru, 2.5 lakhs in Shivamoga, and 1.21 lakhs in Uttara Kannada district. Kodagu district, however, figured at the bottom of the list with an addition of only 56, 612 new members.
