Relaxation of power cut to be extended

Jayalalithaa had announced lifting of non-peak hour restriction on HT consumers from June 5 this year

Chennai: In a relief to industries, Tamil Nadu generation and distribution corporation has decided to extend relaxation of peak hour power restriction on high tension industries till January 15 next year following improved power situation.

High tension industries and commercial consumers were facing 90 per cent power cut during peak hours between 6 pm and 10 pm and 20 per cent cut during the non peak hours.

Chief minister J.Jayalalithaa had announced lifting of non-peak hour restriction on HT consumers from June 5 this year while temporarily relaxing the peak hour power cut (only 10 per cent power consumption was allowed during peak hours for lighting and for security purposes) till September 30 coinciding with the peak wind power season in the State.

However, the power restriction during the peak hour was not reimposed after September 30 due to better power situation. The decision to extend relaxation of peak hour restriction till January 15, 2016, was taken at a meeting at the secretariat on Monday, sources said, adding that it may be further extended depending on resumption of generation of the 1,000 MW unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant which was out of service since June 26.

“The power situation has improved in the wake of commissioning of new power projects and increased supply from inter-state generators under the long-term agreement,” the official said.
