Bengaluru: Flooded homes force residents to terraces

Over 100 families of HRBR Layout, HSR Layout, Neelasandra, Fathima Layout and BTM Layout bore the brunt of flooding

Bengaluru: For hundreds of Bengalureans, Monday blues started in the early hours with heavy rains leaving many parts of the city battered. While office-goers, students and bikers had to wade through water-logged roads, those at home in low-lying areas had to spend the morning baling out water.

BBMP control room officials said that most of the water-logging complaints came from East and South Bengaluru. Though the officials claimed that pools of water were cleared by Monday afternoon, the residents complained of water up to 2 feet on some of the main roads till late in the afternoon.

Over 100 families of HRBR Layout, HSR Layout, Neelasandra, Fathima Layout and BTM Layout bore the brunt of flooding.

Certain pockets of East zone were so badly affected that many residents spent a few hours on the terraces of their buildings till water in their houses receded. In a double whammy, Bescom cut power supply as a precautionary measure. The residents had to spend the night in dark, mostly wet.

Mr Ramu Jhagirdar, a resident of HRBR Layout II Block, said that commuting on water-logged roads was tough and those indoors too did not have any relief. “In my street alone water flooded more than 25 houses. While out on the road, there was more than 2 feet of water and we were stranded inside our own homes. It was a dreadful night,” he said.

In Ulsoor, a big tree uprooted on Sunday night bringing down wires and cables and plunging the whole area into darkness. The BBMP control room officials said that trees uprooted on Monday too and by evening, it had received nine complaints.

A wall collapsed in ‘Ganela’, an old age home in Geddalahalli near Hennur late on Sunday night. Senior citizens at the old age home had to be shifted to different premises until the rain water subsided.
