Convene all-party meet on Cauvery issue: GK Vasan

Mr Vasan said that Karnataka had to release 192 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu
THANJAVUR: The Tamil Nadu Government should convene an all-party meeting to discuss the Cauvery issue, said G.K. Vasan, president, Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) hereon Thursday.
Speaking at the agitation organised by the TMC to condemn the Karnataka Government for not releasing Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu, and urging the central and Tamil Nadu governments to take steps to get Cauvery waters, Mr Vasan said that Karnataka had to release 192 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu.
Surplus water was released to Tamil Nadu only when there were floods and Karnataka was not able to retain surplus waters. Now it was constructing new dams to store water, he charged.
Farmers could not take up ‘Kuruvai’ paddy cultivation this year in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. The standing samba crop was also withering for want of water.
The Cauvery monitoring committee, which met recently at Delhi, had not said anything about the formation of the Cauvery Management Board or Water Regulation Committees. If this situation continued, the Cauvery delta in Tamil Nadu will turn into a desert, he said in anguish.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa should convene an all party meeting and urge the Central Government to get the state’s due share of Cauvery waters from Karnataka, Vasan said. G.R. Moopanar, state executive committee member, M. Yuvaraja, youth wing president were among those who participated in the agitation.
