Chennai: The division bench of Justices S. Tamilvanan and C.T Selvam, which was hearing the suo motu contempt case against P. Dharmarajan, president and A.K. Ramasamy secretary of Madurai Bar Association for staging a series of agitations against the HC Judge N. Kirubakaran, who had passed direction to the state government to enact the mandatory helmet rule.

As the people of the state watched the proceeding live on television channels, the judges expressed different views on how to proceed with the case. Now, the matter will be decided by Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul. While Justice Tamilvanan sought a larger bench headed by Chief Justice to decide the matter, Justice Selvam opposed it.

In his order Justice S. Tamilvanan said, “It is reasonable that a larger bench be constituted, preferably headed by Chief Justice, to give a full stop to the illegal activities of certain lawyers, acting against the judicial institution, one of the important pillars of democracy in the state.”
