Shruti Haasan is in the big league

Actress talks about how she got into films, being a star kid and her upcoming films

Shruti Haasan has joined the 100 crore club with several of her films and her fanbase too has grown. That was evident at a recent event in Bengaluru, where many fans had gathered to catch a glimpse of the actress.

We ask if entering the film world was natural progression being the daughter of Kamal Haasan and Sarika and she admits, “When I was young, I wanted to do this, but then in between it faded away, as I discovered music. Also, I wasn’t confident about how I looked, as I was surrounded by all the beautiful women in the movies. I got into writing and learnt Hindustani classical and was completely involved in it. I stumbled into acting and didn’t realise the seriousness of it, throughout my first film. When I saw myself on screen, I knew this is what I want to do and should do a better job at it.”

We prod her on if being a star kid, she misses out on all the fun her friends her age are having and she says, “Being a star kid never affected me. My parents are not into giving advice, but my mum is extremely independent and with dad, it’s this all-consuming passion for cinema. He’s like the Duracell bunny with all batteries fully charged all the time. About having fun, a lot of friends my age are married and it doesn’t seem like fun.” What’s her ideal man like, we question and she says, “There’s no ideal man, but if I were to look for some qualities in my man, it will be intelligence, loyalty and good humour.”

Talking about her upcoming films she says, “My role in Puli is one of my most feminine characters so far. I’ve admired Sridevi and her career is a great source of inspiration. The other films I’m working on are Vadi Vasal, Vedhalam and Singam 3 in Tamil, Size Zero and another one in Telugu and Rocky Handsome and Kismat Konnection 2 in Hindi, besides many song recordings.”
