Sourav Ganguly is president of Cricket Association of Bengal

Kolkata: Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly is starting a new innings. Putting all speculation to rest about who will take up the reins of the Cricket Association of Bengal following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Ganguly was on Thursday appointed president.

The announcement came directly from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the presence of senior CAB officials and some state ministers at the state Secretariat building at Nabanna on Thursday evening.

Significantly, Dalmiya’s son Avishek was appointed one of the joint secretaries, replacing Sourav, current incumbent who has been holding the post for over one year. Subir Ganguly will remain the other joint secretary and Biswarup Dey will continue as CAB treasurer. “The CAB is going through a crisis after the unfortunate death of Dalmiya. In this period, someone has to take Dalmiya’s legacy forward. I feel Sourav is the right man,” said Ms Banerjee.

“Dalmiya loved cricket so much. So it’s important that the people who are close to him should run the show. The cricket family is most important,” the CM elaborated. She urged all CAB officials to remain united and carry Dalmiya’s legacy forward. “Sourav will decide the association’s line-up now,” she added.

The Chief Minister explained that the decision was taken jointly by the CAB officials. “I am there with them like a deputy and it is not fair for me to interfere,” she said.
