Subramanian Swamy bats for CSK, challenges ban on team

Swamy later told mediapersons that charges against Srinivasan were not proved

Chennai: BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a petition before the Madras high court challenging the ban on Chennai Super Kings. In his PIL, he alleged that former BCCI president, Lalit Modi, who is reportedly in London, was dodging attempts of the Centre to bring him to book for numerous offences committed by him.

He said that as per news reports, Lalit Modi, after fleeing the country, had been influencing the course of litigation in Bombay high court and Supreme court. This, Swamy argued, culminated in the suspension of two star cricket teams – Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years from participating in IPL.

Claiming he had material evidence to prove this, Swamy said enormous injustice had been done to Tamil Nadu-based champions Chennai Super Kings, its owner and Rajasthan Royals in a "one sided adjudication".

The most popular IPL team, CSK, stood unfairly suspended from IPL. Hence, he filed this IPL to grant appropriate relief as the entire proceedings against CSK before Bombay high court and Supreme Court, Justice Mudgal Committee and Justice R.M. Lodha Committee were "motivated and vested litigation." The First bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam posted the matter for September 23.

Swamy later told mediapersons that charges against Srinivasan were not proved. Betting had not been banned in Maharashtra, Goa and on the internet. Srinivasan built the team and inspired the team members. No charges were proved against Srinivasan. Why should spectators of cricket be punished for some deviations that took place. Between 2008 and 2015 BCCI amended its rules.

Swamy also said that “on September 23, Supreme court will hear a petition against former Union minister P. Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis case. A sealed cover had been given to the court by ED and CBI. It will be opened that day”.
