NRHM scam: CBI to question Mayawati

The CBI needs certain clarifications on the funding of some projects under NRHM

New Delhi: In a development that could have significant political ramifications in Uttar Pradesh, the CBI has decided to question former chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati regarding her alleged role in the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam in the state.

The agency is also probing the role of former chief engineer (Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway) Yadav Singh in the NRHM scam. The CBI has already registered two separate cases of corruption against Mr Singh.

Sources said, “the BSP supremo will be examined soon to unearth the larger conspiracy of the Rs 10,000 crore scam. The agency will soon issue summons to her in this regard.” The scam took place during the Mayawati regime in which Central funds for upgrading medical facilities in the state were allegedly siphoned off.

The CBI has already booked former state family welfare minister Babu Singh Kushwaha and then BSP MLA Ram Prasad Jaiswal in connection with the scam. Mr Kushwaha and Mr Jaiswal were close confidants of Ms Mayawati.

The CBI needs certain clarifications on the funding of some projects under NRHM in which some top officials, including then principal secretary (health) Pradeep Shukla has been charged by the agency, sources said.
