Telangana lists poets for Padma awards

Hyderabad: The state government on Monday decided to send a list of 47 persons to the Centre for Bharat Ratna and Padma awards. The names were selected by a committee headed by chief secretary Rajiv Sharma.
Sources said that the committee had decided to recommend former prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao for the Bharat Ratna and the late TS ideologue Prof. A. Jayashankar for Padma Vibhushan. It recommended Padma Sri for poets Goreti Venkanna, Suddala Ashok Teja, Ande Sri, badminton player Jwala Gutta, and Malavanth Purna and S. Anand Kumar, who scaled Everest.

Goreti Venkanna, who was recommended for the Padma Sri by the Telangana State government was born in 1963 in Mahbubnagar and is a noted Telangana poet and folk singer. He became popular with his song Palle Kanneeru Peduthundo in the Telugu film Khubasum, which had depicted the plight of village after globalisation. He was actively involved in the Telangana agitation and is considered one of the icons of TS culture. Suddala Ashok Teja, born in Nalgonda in 1954, is a noted poet and popular lyricist in Tollywood. He worked as a teacher in Karimnagar district before joining the Telugu film industry. He became popular after penning the lyrics for the films Osey Ramulamma and Ninne Pelladutha during the years 1996-1997. He also won the national award for best lyrics in 2003 for his song Nenu Saitham in the Chiranjeevi-starter Tagore, which is based on Sri Sri’s Nenu Saitham from Mahaprasthanam.
