At last, memorials for Velukutty, Sulochana

Achuthanandan chose to read a written speech and did not respond to the queries of media persons later

ALAPPUZHA: Opposition leader V. S. Achuthanadan on Saturday inaugurated separate memorials of yesteryear theatre artist Oachira Velukutty and singer KPAC Sulochana constructed at Krishnapuram near here.

The Opposition leader, who kept politics out of his speech for a change, remembered the contributions of the two artists that enriched cultural Karala. Achuthanandan chose to read a written speech and did not respond to the queries of media persons later.

The function was presided by local MLA C. K. Sadasivan who said the two-storeyed Sulochana memorial building would be used as a library and training centre for students who participate in school and college youth festivals.

It was constructed with the fund allotted by former MLA Simon Britto. Meanwhile, the Velukutty memorial open air auditorium was constructed with Rs 50 lakh from local MLA Sadasivan’s special fund and Rs 15 lakh from former MP C. S. Sujatha’s fund.

The auditorium will be used for giving training to student in dance and musical forms like thiruvathira, vanchipattu, oppana, nadanpattu and classical music, Sadasivan said.
