Row over hostel led to attack

Prof. Narsing Rao was on friday threatened, beaten and injured by students in his chamber
Hyderabad: Principal of Osmania University’s Science College Prof. Narsing Rao was on friday threatened, beaten and injured by students in his chamber. Prof. Rao said, “On Friday evening, a group of more than 30 students entered my chamber and started demanding that they be allotted hostels even though they were not eligible. I told them clearly that as per rules they could not be allotted hostels. They started threatening and suddenly the phone, which was on my table, was thrown at me. I sustained injuries on my forehead.”
CCTV footage from the principal’s chamber has been submitted to the OU police station and a case was booked. Following this, eight students were arrested. Among them was Manavata Roy, a student leader from the university who belongs to the Arts College. The other seven are Science College students.
This is the second time that Prof. Rao had to face physical intimidation from students in his chamber.
Prof. Battu Satyanarayana, president of Osmania University Teachers Association, said, “We condemn the attack. The university is going through dark days. Students are threatening and attacking their teachers. Such incidents are not uncommon in OU. We will take up the issue with higher authorities.”
Principals are mostly threatened by students on the issues of non-payment of hostel and mess dues and allotment of hostels. As per a university official, there are nearly 20,000 students living illegally in OU hostels.
