Road works damage pipes

KMC Mayor says supply of safe drinking water is obstructed in many areas
KARIMNAGAR: The ongoing road widening works have become a huge problem for the citizens. Water pipelines have been damaged due to lack of co-ordination between officials of the roads and buildings and Karimnagar’s civic body while carrying out the widening work in several parts of the city. Consequently, safe drinking water being supplied through these pipelines is getting polluted, posing a threat to public health.
The R&B department took up widening of various stretches in the city, a few days back. Officials are not co-ordinating with other departments concerned at the time of executing the works in the city. This has proved to be a major issue to the city drinking water scheme operated by the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation.
Pipelines, laid to provide drinking water to people of the city, are being broken as executing agencies of road widening work are using machinery to excavate earth. As a result, the water is being contaminated at many places owing to damaged pipelines “ We are forced to rush to repair broken pipelines as people and corporators are criticising us after finding polluted water,” regretted an official from KMC.
According to sources, the R&B officials wrote a formal letter to authorities of the civic boy in the past, but do not send communication on day-to-day basis when the work is going on. “If they communicate regularly while road widening is taking place at some location in the city, we can depute our employees to avoid breakage of the pipelines,” stated another official of the corporation.
Recently, KMC Mayor S. Ravinder Singh expressed his anger over authorities of the roads and buildings department for not intimating them when the collector was reviewing the work. He said that the civic body suffered a loss of Rs 11 lakh caused by callous attitude of the officials belonging to the department. He regretted that supplying of safe drinking water was hampered in many places of the city due to the road works.
