French investigators confirm wing part is from Flight 370

Investigators link a serial number found on the part with a corresponding number on the Boeing 777

Paris:Paris: A French prosecutor says the piece of wing discovered in July on a remote Indian Ocean island has been formally identified as having come from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

In a statement, the Paris prosecutor's office said technical analysis of the part, called a flaperon, had enabled investigators to link a serial number found on the part with a corresponding number on the Boeing 777 that disappeared March 8, 2014 with 239 people aboard.

Malaysia's prime minister last month also confirmed the debris found on a remote island belonged to the missing jet.

The disappearance created one of the biggest mysteries in the history of aviation, sparking a colossal, multinational hunt for the aircraft and a myriad of conspiracy theories about its fate.

The discovery of a two-metre-long (almost seven-foot) wing part called a flaperon on the French Indian Ocean island of La Reunion provided the first glimmer of hope for relatives desperate for answers.

The flaperon was examined at a military lab outside the French city of Toulouse in the presence of Malaysian and Australian experts.
