Chennai: Share auto driver, his aides held for robbing passengers

The gang robbed Manikandan of his half sovereign gold ring, smart phone and Rs 2,000 cash and fled the scene
Chennai: A five-member gang, including a share auto driver, was arrested by the police on Tuesday for robbing passengers who travel in the auto at knife-point. The gang, all friends of the auto driver, would travel in the auto as passengers and would rob passengers travelling alone, police said.
A special team headed by Madhavaram Milk Colony inspector Sundaram was formed to nab the suspects after they robbed two persons on consecutive days last week, police said.
Last Wednesday around 11 pm, A. Manikandan (34), a contract worker with the highways department, boarded the autorickshaw near Mathur. “He was on his way to his native, Cholapuram near Kumbakonam, when he flagged the autorickshaw. When the auto neared the veterinary university, the other ‘passengers’ in the auto threatened him with knives to part away with the valuables,” an investigating officer said.
The gang robbed Manikandan of his half sovereign gold ring, smart phone and Rs 2,000 cash and fled the scene. A crane operator, M. Naresh (26), was also robbed of Rs 8,000 by the same gang in a similar fashion the next day, police said. The special team intercepted the auto during vehicle checks on Chinna Mathur, MMDA 2nd main road, on Tuesday night.
Police recovered two knives and two iron rods from the vehicle after which the occupants of the auto were taken for questioning. The auto driver K. Prabhakaran (24) and his friends, R. Manikandan (24), S. Kabir (23), A. Ajith (19) and K.Vignesh (19), all residents of north Chennai were found to have indulged in the armed robbery. They were arrested and remanded to Puzhal prison. The stolen items were retrieved from them, police said.
