Paint boxing is winning over many fans in the art world

He calls his paintboxing pieces as "Abstract Expressionism"

For Bart van Polanen Petel, mixing his two loves – painting and boxing – is a dream come true. The former student of boxer Joe Frasier, has converted his boxing gym in Tilburg, Netherlands into an art studio.

His technique involves wrapping a canvas around a punching bag. After that he dips his gloves into paint to create literally – knockout pieces of art. His interest in painting was sparked five years ago when he met his girlfriend, artist Nonie Buijze. Eventually his understand of art changed.

“Before that time, when I looked at a typical Mondriaan painting, the familiar thought 'anybody can do this' came to mind,” he told the Huffington Post. Just like how a regular painter knows his technique, canvas, paint and brush, Petel also understands how the paint reacts to certain punches as well as the interaction of colours.

“Also left and right are defined different when you are working with paint on a 'round' surface," he explains, according to the Huffington Post. "After a while you get used to it and you know what punch gets you what result. It is not about filling the canvas with paint, it is about how I can visualize the process. He describes his paintboxing pieces as “Abstract Expressionism”.
