Baltimore: A key Democrat is predicting there will be enough votes in the U.S. Senate by week's end to uphold President Barack Obama's veto of a resolution disapproving the Iran nuclear deal.
Sen. Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, tells students at Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday that he remains undecided. But he says the numbers are close to favoring the president when Congress votes later this month on Republican legislation disapproving of the deal.
As of now, 31 Senate Democrats and independents back the deal, but Cardin says that number will get to 34 by week's end. That's the number needed to uphold a presidential veto.
Cardin didn't name names, but Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware is expected to address the issue later Tuesday.
